Polish miner JSW awarded concession to explore Dębienko 1 coal deposit
Poland's Ministry of Climate and Environment granted Jastrzębska Spółka Węglowa (JSW) a concession to conduct exploratory work on the Dębienko 1 hard coal and methane deposit. The decision followed a competitive tender in which JSW prevailed over rival Silesian Coal International Group of Companies.
Under the concession, JSW will drill test boreholes, extract core samples and analyse them to assess the deposit's geological, quality and economic parameters. The Dębienko 1 deposit lies at the eastern edge of the Knurów‑Szczygłowice mine, allowing the company to use existing underground and surface infrastructure. JSW says the move will enable a significant increase in coke‑coal resources, extending the mine’s operational life and strengthening Poland’s position in the European steel supply chain while reducing reliance on imports.
The concession is seen as a strategic step for JSW, the EU’s largest producer of high‑quality hard coke‑coal, after a period of strikes and organisational uncertainty. The company plans to complete the exploration phase and document the deposit’s potential for rational development.
