Polish MP Wojciech Król faces EPPO request to lift immunity amid procedural disputes

The European Public Prosecutor Office (EPPO) has submitted a request to the Polish Sejm to lift the parliamentary immunity of MP Wojciech Król (Civic Coalition) in connection with a corruption investigation into the modernization of tram infrastructure in the Upper Silesian Metropolitan Area. Król asserts that the EPPO petition does not relate to the alleged misconduct and points to formal defects in the filing, including an incorrect submission method and an electronic signature.

Sejm Marshal Włodzimierz Czarzasty initially returned the request for correction and later forwarded it to the parliamentary immunity committee. Committee chairman Jarosław Urbaniak highlighted procedural irregularities, noting that the request should have been routed through the Polish Prosecutor General and that the document contains errors such as an incorrect birth date. European Chief Prosecutor Laura Kovesi met with Czarzasty to discuss the procedural differences between EU and Polish law. Król has appointed lawyers Marta Smołka and Ryszard Kalisz to represent his interests, and the committee has so far decided not to proceed with the case pending clarification of the formal issues.
