Polish municipalities expand waste relief with senior fee exemptions and free compost bins

Local authorities in Poland have introduced measures to lower household waste costs. Seniors may receive a full exemption from municipal waste collection fees when their property remains unoccupied for an extended period or when they stay in hospitals, sanatoriums, or social care facilities. Eligibility depends on submitting a declaration to the relevant gmina and does not automatically follow from age or pension status.

Separately, the gmina of Babice, supported by the Małopolskie region, is offering free compost bins to residents who are up‑to‑date on waste fees, have space for the unit and intend to use the compost themselves. Applications are accepted until 27 July 2026; after three years the bin becomes the owner’s property and the monthly waste fee may be reduced by 10 zł. A similar program operates in Wrocław, aiming to raise ecological awareness and cut the amount of bio‑waste sent to municipal collection systems.
