Poland coal market faces shortages and rising prices ahead of winter

The Polish coal market is experiencing significant tension as the heating season approaches. Experts and industry representatives report that stocks at mines are approximately 44 percent lower than the previous year, leading to visible shortages of specific fuel types for households.

In several locations, such as the Sobieski Mine in Jaworzno, customers have begun forming queues in the evenings before sales officially commence. Prices are rising sharply, with some private suppliers charging up to 2,500 PLN per ton, while PGG's online availability for certain products has dropped to zero.

Several factors contribute to the instability: a mismatch between domestic production and the specific quality requirements for household heating, increased demand from the energy sector, and rising import costs. While the Minister of State Assets has stated that the supply for large-scale energy companies is under control, concerns remain regarding the availability and affordability of coal for individual households and local heating plants.
