Polish NFZ offers fast sanatorium access and expanded dental coverage

Poland’s National Health Fund (NFZ) enables certain patients to obtain sanatorium stays without the usual year‑long wait. Priority groups such as war veterans, military personnel, honor blood donors and organ donors can be placed ahead of the queue, and “returns” – spots freed when other patients cancel – are offered to those with an approved referral, sometimes within a few days. Waiting times still vary by region, with the shortest queues in north‑east Poland and the longest in Lower Silesia and Silesia.

At the same time, NFZ is set to broaden its dental programme from 2026. While private dental care can cost 300‑600 zł for basic procedures, the public system will begin reimbursing a wider range of services, including extractions of primary and permanent teeth, complex extractions, treatment of periodontal disease, selected radiographs, and various forms of anaesthesia. Children, adolescents, pregnant and postpartum women will gain additional preventive and orthodontic benefits, and dental care will be provided free of charge for many procedures previously paid out‑of‑pocket.
