Polish Olympic Committee appoints acting president after Piesiewicz arrest
The Polish Olympic Committee (PKOl) has undergone a major leadership transition following the arrest of its president, Radosław Piesiewicz. The PKOl board unanimously voted to remove Piesiewicz from his position after he was detained in connection with an investigation into the Zondacrypto cryptocurrency exchange.
Prosecutors allege that Piesiewicz engaged in paid protection and favored a specific group of Zondacrypto creditors during the exchange's liquidity crisis. Specifically, it is alleged he used his influence regarding UOKiK proceedings in exchange for a watch valued at approximately 170,000 PLN (nearly 40,000 euros).
The District Court in Katowice has upheld the decision to keep Piesiewicz in three-month temporary detention, rejecting appeals from his defense.
Marian Kmita, a director of sports at Polsat, has been appointed as the acting president of the PKOl. Kmita was the sole candidate for the role, receiving 43 votes in favor and 9 against. He will serve in this capacity until the end of the current term in April 2027. Kmita has stated that his immediate priorities include conducting an audit of the organization and addressing statutory issues that allowed for excessive presidential autonomy.
