Polish Olympic Committee President arrested over Zondacrypto corruption allegations
Radosław Piesiewicz, President of the Polish Olympic Committee (PKOl), has been placed in three-month temporary detention following corruption allegations. Prosecutors charge him with paid protection and favoring specific creditors of the cryptocurrency exchange Zondacrypto to the detriment of others. Investigations suggest Piesiewicz may have accepted a luxury watch valued at approximately 170,000 PLN in exchange for lobbying on behalf of Zondacrypto's CEO.
The scandal involves a sponsorship agreement between PKOl and Zondacrypto, which board members claim was signed in secret without their knowledge. The contract reportedly granted the sponsor extensive rights to use the images, voices, and photographs of Polish Olympians.
The International Olympic Committee (IOC) is monitoring the situation. Internal communications within PKOl suggest three potential outcomes to resolve the crisis: the voluntary resignation of Piesiewicz, his dismissal by the board, or direct intervention by the IOC. The latter scenario poses the highest risk, as it could lead to the suspension of the Polish Olympic Committee, potentially barring Polish athletes from participating in future Olympic Games.
In the interim, Vice President Mieczysław Nowicki has assumed presidential duties and has called for a meeting of the PKOl presidium on September 8 to determine the organization's future direction.
