Massive August 2026 Pilgrimages to Jasna Góra Draw Thousands

Hundreds of organized walking pilgrimages converged on the Jasna Góra sanctuary in Częstochowa during the week of 6‑13 August 2026. Groups from Przasnysz, Rzeszów, Annopol, Kamion Skierniewicki and other towns covered daily stages of 30‑40 km, aiming to reach the shrine on 13 August. The Polish pilgrimage season expects about 80 000 participants overall.

A severe thunderstorm on 6 August in the village of Szaniec caused a large tree branch to fall on a group of the 45th Kielecka pilgrimage, injuring two women (aged 24 and 54) who were taken to hospital and lightly wounding a third pilgrim. Emergency services cleared the road and the march continued.

Medical reports highlighted a common skin condition dubbed “pilgrim’s disease” or “asphalt dermatitis,” caused by prolonged walking on hot asphalt in summer heat. Symptoms include red, painful patches on calves and shins.

Archbishop Adrian Galbas visited the 35th Pilgrimage of Persons with Disabilities and Families, emphasizing solidarity and the spiritual value of the journey. Przeor Grzegorz Prus of Jasna Góra praised the pilgrimage as a unique blend of physical endurance, communal hospitality and spiritual renewal.
