Polish police speed enforcement halts hundreds of violations, suspends licences

Polish police conducted a major traffic safety operation called "Bezpieczna Autostrada" on the A1 and A4 highways. In the first five months of 2026 the operation recorded 686 road incidents, including seven accidents, one fatality and nine injuries. Officers checked 1,584 vehicles, identifying 1,383 violations – 515 for excessive speed and 134 for improper overtaking. In the Silesian region alone, 523 vehicles were inspected, uncovering 659 offences, 12 criminal cases and five drivers under the influence of alcohol. The enforcement included marked and unmarked patrol cars, speed‑measurement devices and drone surveillance, and involved police units from several voivodeships.

On 17 June 2026, police speed‑control teams stopped three drivers for extreme speeding, revoking their licences and issuing 1,500 zł fines and 13 penalty points each. The offences occurred on national road 57 near Piwnice Wielkie‑Wyżegi, in Wielbark, and on the Faryny‑Karwica route. The drivers, aged 29, 47 and 74, exceeded speed limits by more than 50 km/h. One driver refused the fine and will face court proceedings. Authorities emphasized that excessive speed remains a leading cause of serious road accidents.
