Polish police warn on bike thefts, fine 60‑year‑old thief

Police in Nidzica reminded residents that the start of the cycling season raises the risk of bike thefts. Officers advised using strong, professional locks, securing both the frame and wheel, attaching bikes to solid, immovable objects, and avoiding unattended parking in dark alleys or on low balconies. They also suggested keeping lock‑up areas, such as basements, well‑secured and installing intercoms where absent.

In Grodzisk, detectives arrested a 60‑year‑old man who had taken an unsecured bicycle left outside a child's home. He confessed, was charged with theft of property valued at 2,500 zł, and received a fine of 4,000 zł. Under Polish law the offence can carry up to five years in prison.
