Polish Prosecutor General seeks to lift immunity of three MPs

Prosecutor General Waldemar Żurek sent requests to Sejm Marshal Włodzimierz Czarzasty to lift parliamentary immunity for three lawmakers – Katarzyna Ueberhan of the Left, Władysław Teofil Bartoszewski of the PSL and Tadeusz Chrzan of the PiS. The motions are based on separate investigations by different prosecutor offices.

Ueberhan is accused of providing false information in six asset declarations filed between 2019 and 2023 and of misappropriating a leased vehicle. Bartoszewski faces allegations of misappropriating entrusted funds, using them to purchase residential property, and attempting to obstruct a forthcoming court judgment by selling or donating assets. Chrzan is alleged to have abused his former position as starosta of Jarosław County in 2018, overseeing a defense‑minister‑funded shooting range project in Maleniska, improperly supervising the work and falsifying reports, resulting in a state loss of about 195,000 zł and additional costs of roughly 250,000 zł to the county. The Sejm must approve the removal of immunity for criminal proceedings to continue, though any of the MPs could also voluntarily renounce their immunity.
