Poland's 'two towers' probe dismissed, sparks political backlash

The Warsaw District Prosecutor’s Office closed the investigation into the alleged irregularities surrounding the planned construction of two towers by the company Srebrna and Austrian businessman Gerald Birgfellner, stating that the examined acts did not constitute a criminal offense. The decision was announced on 25 June 2026 by prosecutor Małgorzata Szeroczyńska.

The ruling triggered a wave of political commentary. Law‑and‑Justice (PiS) politicians hailed the outcome, with MP Rafał Bochenek declaring the “false narrative has collapsed into rubble” and MP Przemysław Czarnek labeling the decision a “fiasko” for accusations against the party. In contrast, opposition figures criticised the closure: former justice minister Radosław Sikorski called it “a triumph of political propaganda” and MP Roman Giertych announced an appeal, describing the prosecutor’s move as a “political miscarriage of justice.”

Prosecutor‑general‑candidate Dariusz Korneluk issued a statement of “firm opposition” to accusations that the prosecution was politically driven, defending the independence of the prosecutor’s office. Various commentators and journalists also weighed in, framing the case as a long‑standing symbol of alleged corruption linked to the previous PiS government. The next procedural step will be a possible appeal to a higher court.
