Polish PV Panels Dominate Small Solar Installations as Solar Thermal Lags Behind

In Poland, photovoltaic (PV) panels now account for 99.9% of renewable energy installations up to 50 kW, with more than 1.635 million such systems deployed, according to data from the Energy Regulatory Office. Solar thermal collectors, which convert sunlight to heat, remain a niche, used mainly for water heating or central‑heating support, and have a typical lifespan of 20–25 years.

Technical guides note that PV panels generate direct current (DC) which must be inverted to alternating current (AC) for household use or export to the grid. The type of inverter and the chosen billing scheme (net‑metering or net‑billing) significantly affect the economic viability of a system. Changes to Poland’s net‑billing program in 2022 altered incentives, prompting many owners to reconsider system size and technology choice. While PV can operate year‑round, solar thermal performance declines on colder, low‑temperature days, limiting its usefulness in winter.

The discussion highlights that the rapid uptake of PV is driven by higher overall efficiency for electricity generation and broader applicability, whereas solar thermal collectors, despite high conversion efficiency for heat, serve a narrower market segment.
