Mateusz Morawiecki forms Rozwój Plus group, splitting from PiS
Former Polish prime minister Mateusz Morawiecki left the Law and Justice (PiS) party at the end of July 2026 and registered the Rozwój Plus parliamentary club on 30 July 2026. The new club comprises 40 MPs, three MEPs and one senator, most of whom were former PiS members.
The split, described by analysts as the biggest crisis in PiS’s 25‑year history, prompted several high‑profile departures, including MP Szymon Giżyński, who publicly joined Rozwój Plus. PiS leader Jarosław Kaczyński warned party members not to join external political organisations and threatened disciplinary action against those who did.
On 31 July 2026 Morawiecki hosted a “grill” event in Warsaw under the Rozwój Plus banner, featuring more than 20 debates and panels with over 50 speakers. Organisers obtained a Catholic‑Church dispensation allowing participants to eat meat on the Friday of the event.
Polls conducted in late July show Rozwój Plus at roughly 7 % support, PiS at 17 % and the Civic Coalition leading with about 30 % ahead of the 2027 parliamentary election. The new grouping is now the third‑largest faction in the Sejm, reshaping the opposition landscape.
