Polish split: Morawiecki leads poll for right-wing PM
Overview
The split of former prime minister Mateusz Morawiecki from Law and Justice (PiS) has moved from planning to execution. On 30 July 2026, Morawiecki registered the Rozwój Plus parliamentary club, comprising 40 MPs, three MEPs and one senator. Following a leadership ultimatum from Jarosław Kaczyński, the PiS disciplinary body officially expelled Morawiecki, 38 MPs, and two senators on 12 August for a “serious violation of party statutes.” On 17 August, Rozwój Plus unveiled “Najbezpieczniejsze państwo świata” (The Safest Country in the World), a migration plan proposing a specialized deportation service, a Ministry of Migration and Assimilation, and a “total assimilation” model. The plan also suggests a referendum on suspending Poland’s participation in the Schengen Area. Prime Minister Donald Tusk and Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski criticized the proposals, with Tusk labeling them “pure populism” and Sikorski arguing they aim to “dismantle European integration.” On 26 August, three MEPs—Piotr Müller, Michał Dworczyk, and Waldemar Buda—left the PiS delegation. By early September, Morawiecki intensified his political strategy, announcing a national political marathon beginning 15 October to gather citizen input. He positioned the movement as a serious alternative to Donald Tusk’s government, which he characterized as a “coalition of laziness, incompetence, and bankruptcy.” Morawiecki is actively recruiting local officials to focus on the revitalization of medium-sized cities. On 11 September, it was announced that Daniel Beger, the president of Świętochłowice, is set to join the association. He joins a growing list of local leaders, including the mayors of Tarnobrzeg, Sieradz, Kalisz, and Tomaszów Mazowiecki, as well as councilors from Lublin and officials from the Copper Basin region. The movement aims to establish clubs in regional assemblies (sejmiki), drawing in individuals who are reportedly not affiliated with any political party and are seeking an alternative to PiS.
