Polish schools to serve weekly vegetarian meals under new government nutrition rules

From 1 September 2024, Poland’s Ministry of Health will require school and kindergarten canteens to provide at least one fully plant‑based lunch each week. The regulation, signed by Health Minister Jolanta Sobierska‑Grenda, aims to increase the share of legumes, vegetables and whole‑grain foods while reducing meat, fish, added sugars, salt and fat.

The change is presented as a public‑health measure, citing rising childhood overweight and obesity rates – over 30 % of eight‑year‑olds are overweight and obesity affects 18 % of boys and 9 % of girls. Implementation will need staff training, new recipes and procurement of seasonal, local produce. Experts note the need to balance nutrition to avoid deficiencies and anticipate possible resistance from parents unused to meat‑free dishes.

Support programmes such as the ProVeg “School on Plants” initiative will offer training and educational materials to schools and families, helping them transition to balanced vegetarian menus.
