Poland school nutrition and health education reforms

Entities: Poland · Polish Ministry of Education

Overview

From 1 September 2026 Poland will enforce expanded school‑meal standards and launch a compulsory health‑education subject. Cafeterias must serve at least one fully plant‑based dish each week, prepared from legumes, and offer plant‑based alternatives on meat‑ or fish‑days. The weekly menu will include two fresh‑meat days, one fish day and a flexible day that may be plant‑based, grain‑based or fish‑based. Soups must be vegetable‑broth based at least twice weekly, every meal must contain a vegetable or fruit (vegetables outnumbering fruit), and whole‑grain products, plant oils and seasonal, local, ecological ingredients are favoured. Fried dishes are limited to two per week. Free instructional materials and 25 online recipes are provided to help schools implement the changes.

The Ministry of National Education will replace the former “family life education” with a compulsory “health education” subject, taught one hour per week in primary schools (grades 4‑8) and two hours total in secondary schools. The curriculum covers first aid, digital hygiene, mental health, nutrition, physical activity, internet safety, addiction prevention, environmental health and, in secondary schools, the health‑care system. Topics on sexual health move to an optional class; parents may request exemption for the sexual‑health module, and school directors will schedule the optional lessons. Existing teachers of biology, natural sciences, physical education and school psychologists can deliver the lessons, requiring no additional staff.
