Wojciech Król detained by CBA following Sejm vote
Wojciech Król, a Member of Parliament for the Civic Coalition (KO), has been detained in Warsaw by the Central Anticorruption Bureau (CBA). The arrest follows a decisive vote by the Sejm, where 422 deputies supported the motion for his detention and temporary arrest, with only three voting against and five abstaining.
The action was taken at the request of the European Public Prosecutor's Office (EPPO), which is investigating suspected corruption and fraud involving public procurement contracts for tram infrastructure modernization in the Upper Silesian and Zagłębie Metropolis. This marks the second major legal move by the EPPO regarding Król; a previous request in July resulted in the lifting of his parliamentary immunity but not his arrest.
Prosecutor Agnieszka Marcińczyk clarified that this second request is based on new evidence and different legal grounds discovered during the ongoing investigation. Król has denied all allegations, specifically disputing claims regarding a trip to Thailand and the use of a vehicle, asserting that the car was merely borrowed from a friend. His defense counsel has also criticized the EPPO, alleging significant translation errors in the English version of the legal documents.
