Corruption investigation of Polish MP Wojciech Król

Overview

The European Public Prosecutor’s Office (EPPO) has initiated investigations into Wojciech Król, a member of the Civic Coalition parliamentary club, involving multiple allegations of corruption and bribery.

Initial investigations focused on the illegal procurement of EU subsidies for the ‘Stara Huta’ office complex project via Silesia Invest. Prosecutors alleged that Król offered to secure over 27 million PLN in funding in exchange for a 5 percent commission. The EPPO requested the Sejm authorize Król’s arrest and detention, citing concerns that he might interfere with evidence by pressuring witnesses.

Subsequent allegations expanded to include potential corruption involving the automotive industry and the housing and energy sectors. Investigators claim Król may have accepted bribes, such as a 2,500 euro payment and luxury travel, in exchange for facilitating state contracts with the Ministry of National Defence and the Ministry of Interior and Administration. Król has denied the allegations, specifically refuting claims regarding travel to Thailand and characterizing the legal proceedings as attempts to exert “psychological pressure.”
