Polish Sports Official Radosław Piesiewicz Targeted in Nationwide VAT Fraud Probe

Polish authorities have launched a large‑scale investigation into former head of the Polish Basketball Association (PZKosz), Radosław Piesiewicz, on suspicion of a VAT fraud scheme. The Regional Prosecutor’s Office in Gdańsk opened the case in March 2025, alleging that companies linked to PZKosz issued fictitious invoices that funneled more than 9 million PLN into private expenses of the federation’s president during his 2018‑2024 tenure.

On 4 August 2025, officers from the Central Anti‑Corruption Bureau (CBA) and the National Revenue Administration (KAS) carried out coordinated searches at over ten locations, including offices of PZKosz, the Polish Basketball League, the Polish Olympic Committee (which Piesiewicz has led since 2023), and private residences across the Mazowieckie, Małopolskie, Pomorskie and Warmian‑Masurian voivodeships. The actions were conducted on the prosecutor’s order, as confirmed by the spokesperson for the Minister coordinating special services.

Investigators aim to determine the extent of the alleged misuse of public funds and the involvement of firms cooperating with the basketball federation. A decision on possible charges is expected in September 2025.
