Poland's butter price drops to about 5 zł per 200 g block

May 2026 retail price data for Poland show that overall consumer prices rose 3.4 % year‑on‑year, a slight slowdown from March’s 3.7 %. Among 17 product groups, household chemicals recorded the strongest increase (‑9.1 % YoY), followed by beverages such as tea, coffee, beer and vodka (+8.6 %) and sweets (+5.8 %). Fats fell the most, down 11.3 % YoY, with butter losing over 30 % in price. The average butter block (200 g) fell to 5.45 zł in April and was expected to reach around 5 zł in June–July, after a sharp rise to 8.9 zł in late 2024. The fall is linked to lower milk‑fat supply, stabilising energy costs and renewed promotional activity by retailers. A price‑basket survey covering 40 staple items in 13 chains showed mixed trends: eight chains reduced May prices versus April, while five saw increases. Intermarché recorded the largest price drop (‑6.55 %), whereas Lidl posted the biggest rise (+2.09 %). The average basket cost 331.54 zł in May, 4.9 % higher than a year earlier. Together, the data illustrate a gradual easing of inflation pressures in Poland’s food and non‑food markets, with butter being the most notable gain for shoppers.
