Polish Supreme Court strips immunity of ex‑prosecutor over deadly 2024 Olkusz crash

Poland's Supreme Court has lifted the immunity of former district prosecutor Magdalena Z., 58, in connection with a fatal traffic accident that occurred on 28 November 2024 on national road 94 near Sieniczna, close to Olkusz. The crash killed 28‑year‑old mother Dorota Bejgier, who was walking with her child when a Kia driven by the prosecutor allegedly looked at her phone, lost control and struck her. Investigators found Magdalena Z. to be sober, seized the vehicle for technical examination and ordered a reconstruction of the event.

The court’s decision, announced on 20 May 2026, removes the legal shield that had prevented criminal charges for more than a year and a half. The ruling is not yet final; the prosecutor can appeal, after which she could face charges of causing a fatal road accident, punishable by six months to eight years in prison. The case has drawn intense public and media attention, with the victim’s family and local witnesses pressing for accountability. Dorota Bejgier’s death left her young daughter orphaned, intensifying calls for justice.
