Polish tourist dies in Slovak High Tatras after cardiac arrest
A 59‑year‑old Polish tourist suffered sudden chest pain while hiking on the red trail in the Mengusovská valley near Chaty pod Rysami, a popular route to the Rysy peak in the High Tatras. He lost consciousness, fell and sustained a head injury. Bystanders immediately performed cardiopulmonar resuscitation (CPR) and used an automatic external defibrillator (AED) brought by staff from the mountain hut.
A helicopter from Poprad and a mountain‑rescue team of the Slovak Mountain Rescue Service (HZS) arrived, continuing advanced resuscitation with a mechanical chest‑compression device, but vital functions could not be restored. The body was flown to Starý Smokovec, where it was handed to Slovak police. This was the second fatal incident on the Rysy routes within two days, prompting the Tatra National Park and rescue services to urge hikers to be well prepared and check weather forecasts.
