Polish tourists shift to mountains as seaside prices surge

Rising fuel costs and higher prices for accommodation and food have prompted Polish holidaymakers to favor mountain destinations over the Baltic coast. Data from Travelist.pl shows that in May‑July mountain bookings reached 43 % of all reservations, overtaking the seaside for the first time in years, while coastal bookings fell to 38 %. Hotel rates in popular mountain areas now start at about 300 zł per night for two people, and many travellers are using buses or cross‑border fuel stations to cut expenses.

At the same time, seaside food prices have climbed sharply. A basic waffle costs 9‑11 zł, but a version topped with whipped cream, fruit and chocolate can cost as much as a restaurant lunch. Prices for fish dishes have also risen, with a kilogram of cod in the most expensive resort reaching 250 zł. Economists attribute the price hikes to the “economy of the promenade” – higher charges the closer a business is to the beach and main tourist routes.
