Polish town Zgierz launches assessment of post‑industrial soil contamination

The municipality of Zgierz presented the results of ongoing analyses of soil and groundwater on former Boruta industrial sites. Experts warned of possible migration of hazardous pollutants and outlined two remediation scenarios: a sealed "sarcophagus" to prevent leaks, or the construction of an on‑site hazardous‑waste treatment facility.

State secretary for the Ministry of Climate and Environment Anita Sowińska announced that the project received 100 million PLN from the National Recovery Plan, with additional EU co‑financing. The environmental assessment report is expected by August 2026, and a full remediation plan will be ready by September 2026. Mayor Przemysław Staniszewski emphasized the need to protect groundwater, including the Bzura River, and to secure the former waste deposits for future generations.
