Polish towns build and renovate retention reservoirs to reduce flood risk

Stalowa Wola announced a tender to construct an open‑air retention basin on Przemysłowa Boczna Street. The 1,770 m³ tank will store excess rainwater, relieve the municipal storm‑water system and lower the risk of local flooding. The project, part of the city’s “green‑blue infrastructure” climate‑adaptation plan, includes pipelines, flow regulators, monitoring equipment, lighting and educational signage.

In the Gmina Sońsk, the Łopacin retention reservoir was renovated after receiving PLN 105,000 in funding. The works cleared accumulated sediments, reinforced the banks to prevent erosion and created a surrounding recreational space. Local officials highlighted the reservoir’s role in flood mitigation, drought relief and improving the micro‑climate, while also providing an attractive community area.

Both initiatives aim to increase resilience to intense rainfall events and support broader climate‑adaptation efforts in Poland.
