Poland expands flood management, adds river renaturation

Overview

Poland’s climate‑adaptation programme is expanding flood management and river renaturation nationwide. New basins are being built in Kocmyrzów‑Luborzyca (≈1,900 m³, 85 % EU‑funded) with a 430‑day target, while tests at Racibórz’s retention‑tank led to plans for an extra basin to protect streets and a national road. Toruń is deepening the Kaszownik reservoir with a near‑10 million‑zł investment (over 6 million zł from EU funds) to increase flood‑mitigation capacity and public access. Projects also include rebuilding the Sieczka reservoir in Aleksandrów, modernising Starachowice’s Piachy Reservoir into a year‑round recreation centre, and installing piezometers around Lake Płotki to monitor its decline. Gmina Poniec is converting a dredged pond into a retention reservoir for the new Berlinek estate, and a 200 mm sanitary sewage network was approved in Gmina Szemud. The European Regional Centre for Eco‑hydrology highlights that river regulation peaked in 2003 (858.5 km) and fell to 47.4 km by 2023, prompting the State Water Management authority to promote blue‑green infrastructure and river renaturation to improve groundwater recharge and buffer flood and drought extremes. Recent contracts will modernise Pułtusk Pump Station No. 1, expanding its inlet and installing new pumps, and upgrade Jaworzno’s Bory estate water‑supply network by replacing 1,000 m of pipelines.
