Polish towns turn plastic and glass waste into valuable resources

In Lower Silesia and Opole, discarded plastic is increasingly treated as a marketable raw material rather than waste. Local firms collect, sort and re‑process post‑industrial plastic, creating jobs and keeping revenue within the region. Recycling plastic reduces the need for new oil‑based feedstock and lowers greenhouse‑gas emissions, while shorter transport chains cut costs for municipalities.

On 20 June, the town of Żywiec will host a large‑scale glass‑collection event. Residents who bring at least ten glass bottles or jars can receive up to four lavender plants, with a total of 2,000 seedlings planned for distribution. Organized by the Rekopol waste‑packaging recovery association and the municipal services company EMPOL, the initiative is part of the national “Glass Must Go On” campaign promoting continuous recycling of glass, which can be re‑processed indefinitely without quality loss. Both projects aim to raise public awareness, strengthen the circular‑economy model and reduce the environmental impact of waste disposal.
