Polish water utilities launch remote meter reading and replace thousands of water meters

Polish water utilities are modernising their networks by installing radio‑enabled meters that transmit consumption data and automatically detect leaks. Zielonogórskie Water and Sewerage signed a contract for 18,000 radio modules, while Aquanet in the Poznań region is upgrading about 130,000 meters at a cost of roughly 42 million zł, providing hourly usage data and alerting users to abnormal consumption that may indicate a break or illegal tap. The new systems aim to curb the country's high water losses—estimated at 20‑25 % nationally and up to 58 % in some areas—by quickly locating and repairing faults.

In the town of Marki, a separate programme began on 13 July, offering free five‑yearly meter replacements across dozens of streets. Residents are notified of upcoming visits, and the initiative is part of the broader effort to improve accuracy of billing and reduce waste.
