Political concerns rise over police reform in DR and transport security in Peru

In the Dominican Republic, retired National Police Colonel Armando Pérez Martínez has sent a letter to President Luis Abinader expressing concerns regarding proposed police reforms. Pérez Martínez argues that certain changes to the hierarchical structure, rank nomenclature, and pension systems could demotivate officers and weaken the institution's foundations. He suggested that instead of structural changes, the priority should be increasing economic, technological, and logistical resources.

In Peru, Deputy Norma Yarrow has criticized the Ministry of Transport and Communications' plan to reduce traffic fines by 90 percent. Yarrow stated that the primary issue for transporters is not financial penalties, but rather the insecurity, extortion, and violence faced by drivers and motorcyclists. She called for an emergency plan to combat crime and suggested a renewal of high-ranking police leadership to address security failures.
