Political disputes emerge in Slovenia and Serbia over leadership and election integrity

In Slovenia, National Assembly President Zoran Stevanović has dismissed an opposition initiative for a consultative referendum regarding his removal as a ‘farce’ and ‘harassment of people.’ Stevanović argued that the procedure for appointing and dismissing the Assembly President is clearly defined by law and requires 46 votes, making the referendum proposal ‘fruitless.’ He suggested that such political maneuvers are attempts to divert attention from serious issues.

In Serbia, Interior Minister Ivica Dačić responded to allegations made by Dragan Milić, president of the Movement for the Decentralization of Serbia, regarding potential election fraud. Milić claimed that a ‘massive election theft’ is being prepared through the inclusion of ‘fake citizens’ on voter lists, citing data that 238,890 citizenships were granted between 2015 and 2025. Dačić labeled these claims as ‘lies’ and ‘hypocrisy,’ noting that the number of citizenships granted this year through June 1st was only 4,168. Dačić defended the legal process for granting citizenship to those of Serbian descent, contrasting current figures with higher rates seen between 2000 and 2012.
