Political institutional concerns rise in Guatemala and Mexico

In Guatemala, citizens across different generations are expressing shared concerns regarding the 2027 elections. Discussions highlight anxieties about the effectiveness of political institutions, the need for rule of law, and the desire for a political system that offers meaningful choices rather than superficial options. While older generations exhibit skepticism based on past failed promises, younger citizens express frustration with a system that has long produced repetitive political problems.

In Mexico, the Congress of Yucatán received a 58.7% transparency rating in the 2026 evaluation by Ciudadanos por Municipios Transparentes (Cimtra), placing it eighth nationally and above the 43.4% national average. Lizbeth Estrada Osorio of Cimtra noted that while the current Morena-led majority has improved formal transparency and legislative performance, there are significant setbacks in public spending transparency, access to information, and citizen participation. This represents a recovery of 7.4% compared to previous evaluations, following a low of 51.3% under the PAN majority in 2022.
