Political leaders in Tunisia and Guinea raise safety concerns for detained opposition figures
Political leaders in Tunisia and Guinea are raising alarms regarding the safety and whereabouts of detained opposition figures.
In Tunisia, Abir Moussi, president of the Parti destourien libre (PDL), has expressed fears of “physical liquidation” while in prison. Detained since October 2023, Moussi sent a letter to the public alleging maneuvers to remove her from her party leadership. Her detention follows several judicial proceedings related to her political stances and electoral comments. Human rights organizations, including Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch, have noted increasing repression of political dissent in the country.
In Guinea, the Mouvement démocratique libéral (MoDeL) reported that its president, Aliou Bah, was transferred from the Coyah civil prison during the night of October 6-7, 2026, to an unknown destination. Bah, who has been in detention since December 2024, was previously sentenced to two years in prison for defamation against President Mamadi Doumbouya. The MoDeL leadership is working with lawyers to determine his location and ensure his physical and moral integrity.
