Political news consumption linked to increased anxiety and workplace fatigue
Research indicates that political fatigue and the overconsumption of news are contributing to increased anxiety and decreased engagement among workers and students. A nine-week study of 308 full-time U.S. workers, led by Ian Hughes of Texas A&M University, found that consuming negative political information through news, podcasts, and social media correlates with higher anxiety and lower willingness to assist colleagues in the workplace.
To mitigate these effects in professional settings, experts suggest setting clear policies regarding political discussions, maintaining neutral office environments, and protecting employee recovery time.
The rapid pace of modern news cycles, particularly on social media, exacerbates this stress. A 2026 study from the Reuters Institute noted that 39% of young people rely on social platforms as their primary news source. Consequently, a 2024 study from GWI found that one-third of Americans actively avoid important news on social media to manage their anxiety.
