Impact of political news on US workplace well-being
Overview
Research involving American workers indicates that the consumption of political news significantly influences mental health and professional behavior. A nine-week study of 308 full-time employees found that consuming negative political information via news, podcasts, and social media is linked to increased anxiety, lower employee engagement, and a decreased willingness to assist colleagues.
In contrast, the consumption of positive political news was associated with higher levels of hope and stronger job engagement. Experts suggest that because political stress often follows individuals into professional environments, organizations may need to implement policies to maintain neutral office environments and protect employee recovery time to mitigate these effects.
