Bosnia and Herzegovina election preparations enter final phase
As Bosnia and Herzegovina approaches the general elections on October 4, the Central Election Commission (CIK) has confirmed that all remaining preparatory activities are on schedule. Key logistical tasks include the testing and configuration of new technologies, printing and verifying ballot QR codes, and training for polling station staff and operators. All scanners required for the election process have arrived in the country, with the distribution of equipment and ballots to local commissions scheduled to begin on September 27.
However, several challenges have emerged. The CIK reported that political parties have failed to fulfill their legal obligation to nominate a sufficient number of members for election committees, creating difficulties for municipal and city commissions. Additionally, the Pod Lupom Coalition has warned that election administration training must be intensified to ensure the successful implementation of new biometric identification and scanning technologies, noting that some training sessions have been overly theoretical.
In related developments, the CIK has issued several fines for violations of election laws. The Sigurna Srpska movement was fined 15,000 KM for premature campaigning and the use of children in political purposes. Other fines were issued to various political actors for similar violations. Meanwhile, the CIK has also adjusted operator pay for the upcoming elections to 310 KM and awarded the contract for printing and packaging candidate lists to a group including Smartmatic BiH and DSC.
