Polycystic ovary syndrome renamed polyendocrine metabolic ovarian syndrome (PMOS)

The medical community is adopting a new name for the condition previously known as polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). As of May 2026, the disorder will be called polyendocrine metabolic ovarian syndrome (PMOS) to better reflect its hormonal and metabolic characteristics rather than the misleading focus on ovarian cysts.

Advocates argue that the renamed condition will improve diagnosis and treatment by highlighting risks such as type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and mental‑health challenges. Experts say up to 70 % of individuals with the disorder go unrecognized, partly due to the old terminology. The new label is intended to promote comprehensive screening and coordinated care across endocrinology, reproductive medicine, and primary health services.

The change is being promoted by clinicians including Dr. Nicole M. Marchetto of Shady Grove Fertility, and health‑benefit providers are encouraging patients to discuss the updated terminology with their providers to ensure appropriate monitoring and support.
