Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is undergoing a significant clinical renaming to polyendocrine metabolic ovarian syndrome (PMOS). This change reflects an evolving medical understanding of the condition as a complex, multisystem endocrine and metabolic disorder rather than a purely gynecologic or ovarian issue. The condition affects approximately 170 million women globally during their reproductive years.
Diagnostic criteria for PMOS include irregular cycles (oligoanovulation), hyperandrogenism—which can manifest as acne, hirsutism, or hair loss—and polycystic ovaries visible on ultrasound or via elevated anti-Müllerian hormone levels.
In the United States, research is focusing on the difficulties of diagnosis, particularly when distinguishing PCOS from obesity due to shared features like insulin resistance and high insulin levels. Researchers at Virginia Commonwealth University are utilizing data mining techniques and the KNIME platform to study associations between biomarkers and the syndrome. This approach aims to identify hidden correlated features within small clinical study samples to improve diagnostic accuracy.
