Polyendocrine Metabolic Ovarian Syndrome Linked to Cardiovascular Risk in Women with Type 1 Diabetes
A cross‑sectional study of 147 premenopausal women with Type 1 diabetes, including 30 with polyendocrine metabolic ovarian syndrome (PMOS), found no significant worsening of circulating lipoprotein or inflammatory glycoprotein profiles after adjusting for age and diabetes duration. Distinct lipid patterns emerged when women with both conditions were compared to those with PMOS alone, and inflammatory markers were elevated in the combined groups.
A separate analysis from the University of Pennsylvania reported that women with PMOS are four times more likely to develop cardiovascular disease, a risk that persists after accounting for hypertension, diabetes and other factors. Experts cite under‑diagnosis and under‑treatment of heart disease in women, emphasizing the need for further prospective research on PMOS‑related cardiometabolic risk.
