Polyscias fruticosa consumption advisories issued in Vietnam
Polyscias fruticosa, commonly known as Ding Ling, is a traditional medicinal plant in Vietnam used as a herbal tea to reduce fatigue and support health. While research suggests potential antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and blood sugar control benefits, most evidence is currently limited to laboratory or animal studies.
The Vietnam Food Administration and the Ministry of Health advise against using Ding Ling leaf water as a total replacement for plain water. Excessive consumption due to high saponin content may lead to side effects such as fatigue, nausea, dizziness, or digestive issues, including diarrhea.
Experts recommend moderate use, suggesting approximately 15-20g of fresh leaves or 5-10g of dried leaves per 500-700ml of water. Users are cautioned not to consume highly concentrated brews under the misconception that higher potency equates to better health benefits.
