Polyscias fruticosa medicinal usage in Vietnam

Overview

Polyscias fruticosa, known as Ding Ling or the ‘ginseng of the poor,’ is a traditional medicinal plant in Vietnam used for various therapeutic purposes. The plant contains nutrients such as glucosides, alkaloids, saponins, tannins, 13 amino acids, and vitamin B1.

Traditional practitioners note that the leaves possess cooling properties used to detoxify, relieve itching, stop bleeding, and treat digestive issues. The roots are utilized for restorative remedies to improve blood circulation and stamina, often treating coughs, rheumatism, and back pain.

Health authorities and experts have issued advisories regarding consumption. The Vietnam Food Administration and the Ministry of Health caution against replacing plain water with Ding Ling leaf water. Due to high saponin content, excessive consumption or highly concentrated brews may lead to side effects including fatigue, nausea, dizziness, diarrhea, or toxicity. Experts recommend moderate usage, such as 15-20g of fresh leaves or 5-10g of dried leaves per 500-700ml of water.
