Pombal recognized by Ombudsman for Storm Kristin response
The Portuguese Ombudsman (Provedoria de Justiça) has recognized the municipality of Pombal for its effective response to the effects of Storm Kristin, which struck the region in late January. Pombal was one of three municipalities in the Central Region, alongside Leiria and Marinha Grande, selected for an in-depth analysis of housing reconstruction support.
The Ombudsman's report highlighted several best practices implemented by the municipality, including technical assistance provided to local parishes to help prepare applications for reconstruction aid. The municipality also monitored approximately 700 families through local Social Commissions and established a 500,000 euro municipal fund to support the recovery of the local business fabric, addressing a national gap in direct support for micro-enterprises and independent workers.
In the parish of Meirinhas, which suffered significant housing damage, the report noted the successful emergency relocation of four families using housing provided by a local company. Additionally, the activation of Population Concentration and Support Zones (ZCAP) was cited as a key civil protection measure that allowed for an organized response to flood risks.
