Pope Leo XIV discharged from hospital after lung cancer surgery

Pope Leo XIV has been discharged from the Gemelli Polyclinic in Rome following surgery to remove a lung adenocarcinoma. The procedure, which involved a video-assisted removal of the lower lobe of his right lung, was completed successfully on October 13.

Medical reports indicate a favorable recovery, with the Pope regaining the ability to perform daily activities independently and even celebrating Mass at the hospital. Following clinical evaluations, including blood tests and a chest X-ray, he is scheduled to return to the Vatican and lead the Angelus prayer from his papal apartment on Sunday, October 19.

While his recovery is progressing well, the Vatican has expressed caution regarding his upcoming international schedule. Specifically, his planned November pilgrimage to South America, including visits to Argentina, Uruguay, and Peru, remains uncertain. Vatican Secretary of State Pietro Parolin noted that the Pope may need to adjust his pontificate or travel plans based on future medical advice and the results of ongoing tests.
