Pope Leo XIV pursues Iran‑US peace, plans Peru visit and meets US Vice President

After his weekly general audience, Pope Leo XIV expressed optimism that a forthcoming Iran‑US agreement, to be signed in a Swiss hotel on 19 June, would enhance mutual trust, security and stability in the Middle East. He thanked the nations that facilitated the talks and urged continued dialogue over nuclear disarmament.

The Pope confirmed a papal pilgrimage to Peru in the first half of November, with scheduled stops in Chiclayo, Lima, Piura, Pulcallpa and Cuzco. The itinerary reflects his long‑standing ties to the country, where he served as bishop of Chiclayo and holds Peruvian citizenship.

U.S. Vice President JD Vance disclosed that he has spoken privately with Pope Leo XIV in recent weeks, describing their relationship as “positive” despite public policy differences, notably over the Iran conflict. Vance praised the Pope’s recent encyclical on artificial intelligence while noting their distinct roles.

On 18 June, Pope Leo XIV presided over the funeral Mass for the late Cardinal Camillo Ruini in St. Peter’s Basilica, honoring the 95‑year‑old prelate with remarks on truth and freedom.

Separately, the Diocese of Asidonia‑Jerez marked the 43rd anniversary of Leo XIV’s priestly ordination, offering prayers and congratulations to the pontiff.
