Shakira calls for peace and education at World Cup 2026 opening

Colombian singer Shakira used her performance at the opening ceremony of the 2026 FIFA World Cup in Mexico to promote global peace and the need for education for vulnerable children. In Instagram Stories she urged that the tournament be a source of joy and unity, and highlighted her work with the Pies Descalzos foundation, which supports psychosocial care, nutrition and schooling in disadvantaged communities.

She also celebrated Mexico’s 2‑0 victory over South Africa in the inaugural match at Estadio Banorte, expressing enthusiasm for the competition and congratulating the Mexican team and fans.
