Pope León XIV’s Spain visit underscores abortion and right‑to‑life debate
Pope León XIV travelled to Spain, where he invoked his recent encyclical *Magnifica Humanitas* to stress the ontological dignity of every human being. He reiterated that the first human right is the right to life from conception to natural death, condemning abortion, euthanasia and the killing of innocents as grave sins.
During the visit the Pope noted that Spain records roughly 106,172 abortions each year, framing the protection of fetal life as a constitutional goal. He concluded his remarks by calling for a perspective that favours the vulnerable – widows, orphans, refugees, and children – echoing themes from historian Marc Bloch’s 1940 testament.
The visit and statements are expected to fuel ongoing national discussions on abortion legislation and the role of religious teaching in public policy.
