Pope Leo XIV recovers after successful lung cancer surgery in Rome
Pope Leo XIV is recovering at Rome’s Gemelli Hospital following successful surgery to remove the lower lobe of his right lung. The procedure, which lasted approximately 90 minutes and utilized a video-assisted technique, was performed to treat a diagnosed lung adenocarcinoma.
The Vatican confirmed that the surgery was completed without complications and that the 71-year-old pontiff has since returned to his hospital room, where he is described as being lucid, oriented, and eating normally. Post-operative blood tests and a chest X-ray have yielded normal results, and the Pope has begun respiratory physiotherapy.
While the Vatican stated that the Pope's planned November tour of Uruguay, Argentina, and Peru remains unchanged, the diagnosis has introduced uncertainty regarding his future schedule. Peruvian President Keiko Fujimori noted that the tour dates could potentially shift depending on the length of his recovery. All papal audiences have been cancelled through October 20.
