Pope Leo XIV assists pilgrim who faints from heat at St. Peter's Square

During Pope Leo XIV's general audience on 18 May 2026 in St. Peter's Square, a pilgrim collapsed while waiting to meet the pontiff. Temperatures in Rome were above 30 °C, prompting a heat warning.

The Pope halted his greetings, knelt beside the man and remained with Vatican medical staff as they provided first aid. The pilgrim was later placed on a wheelchair and escorted out of the square under an umbrella to shield him from the sun.

After confirming the pilgrim's condition was stable, Pope Leo XIV resumed the audience. The episode underscored the impact of the extreme heat on the large crowd gathered in the Vatican.
