Pope Leo XIV calls Zelenskyy to urge humanitarian ceasefire in Oleshky

Pope Leo XIV held a telephone conversation with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Monday, October 19, to discuss the critical humanitarian crisis in Oleshky, a city in the Kherson region currently under Russian control. During the call, the Pope reiterated his request for a humanitarian ceasefire, a proposal he had previously presented to Russian President Vladimir Putin during a call on Friday, October 16.

The Holy See expressed hope that cooperation between Russia and Ukraine would facilitate the delivery of food and medical assistance, as well as the safe, voluntary evacuation of civilians. The situation in Oleshky is described as dire, with residents facing severe shortages of food, water, electricity, and essential medical services.

The Pope’s diplomatic efforts follow his recent recovery from lung cancer surgery at Gemelli Hospital in Rome. While the Kremlin noted Putin’s well-wishes for the Pope’s recovery, Moscow has attributed the humanitarian difficulties in the region to the actions of the Kyiv regime. Zelenskyy thanked the Pope for his prayers and for highlighting the escalation of Russian attacks on Ukrainian cities.
