Pope Leo XIV calls for responsible digital communication during Spain trip

During a visit to Spain, Pope Leo XIV met Spanish leaders and addressed crowds in Madrid, Barcelona and the Canary Islands. His itinerary included the inauguration of a new tower at the Sagrada Família, a meeting with migrants who crossed the Atlantic, a dialogue with victims of abuse, a prayer vigil with youth, and talks with King Felipe VI, Queen Letizia, Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez and members of the Spanish Parliament.

In his Madrid remarks, the pontiff warned that words and images shared on social media can wound or heal, emphasizing that all forms of communication carry responsibility. He urged universities, companies, artists, athletes and technology developers to consider the impact of their messages on the poor and excluded, and called for dialogue based on human dignity. The Pope also highlighted the educational role of sport and the need for inclusive access to art and technology.

The visit underscored the Pope’s concern about social and economic exclusion worldwide and his appeal for solidarity across institutions.
